There is a place on the California coast where the land seems to have been carved by something older and wilder than weather — where cliffs rise and plunge and the sea hovers at their feet like a patient thing. Dana Christensen knows that place. She moved west and fell in love with it, and she has spent years learning how to hold it in paint the way memory holds a sensation: not literally, but truly. In this painting, the cliffs emerge from a field of mist and pale blush, monumental and glowing with a buried warmth — rust and amber and violet glimpsed through the fissures in the rock. The teal is the teal of sea-glass and deep water and the particular light of late afternoon on the northern California coast. It does not illustrate a cliff. It becomes one. Christensen came to painting by way of psychology, advertising, and a long devotion to the camera — and every one of those chapters is present here. The photographer's instinct for light and shadow. The psychologist's feel for the emotional weight of space. The storyteller's understanding that what you leave out matters as much as what you put in. This is a painting about the natural world, beautiful and elemental, doing exactly what she has always asked her art to do: making an emotional connection with the viewer.
