Somewhere between the desert and the sea, Dana Christensen encountered something that stopped her: a cactus that had forgotten how to grow in a straight line. Instead, it had spread sideways, folding and ruffling into a fan of ridges and miniature spines — a cristate form, a glorious biological accident. She brought her photographer's eye to it, seeing in its pale mauve and yellow-green surfaces the same tension between beauty and strangeness that has driven her work from the mill towns of Connecticut to the open spaces of the American West. The vessel holding this unlikely crown is as considered as the subject itself — a mirrored black-and-gold pot that reflects and distorts, doubling the cactus's presence while grounding it in something almost ceremonial. The dark background recedes like a night sky, and the warm golden cloth beneath anchors the scene in quiet domesticity. But nothing about this image is truly domestic. It is a portrait of otherness, of nature's capacity to surprise. This is the heart of Dana's Altered Images series: the natural world, beautiful as well as distressed, transformed through her lens and her hand into something that carries its story forward. In this crested cactus, patient and strange in its mirrored bowl, she has found a subject that speaks without words about resilience, mutation, and the unexpected grace of imperfection.
