Dana Christensen has always been drawn to things that carry a sense of loss — the abandoned mill towns of her East Coast youth, the distressed corners of the natural world that most people drive past without stopping. In this work, she turns that gaze on a windswept coastal tree, its branches bare and reaching, its trunk anchored at the edge of a rocky precipice above a darkened sea. Through her process of photographic alteration, she has stripped the scene of color and flipped its tonal values, so that what was dark becomes luminous and what was light recedes into shadow. The effect is like a memory seen in negative — not quite the place itself, but the feeling of the place, as it remains long after you've left. The tree becomes a skeleton of itself, beautiful precisely because it endures. Behind it, the cliffs and water hold their own ancient shapes, rendered strange and newly visible in their inverted state. It is the kind of image that asks you to look at the natural world not as it appears, but as it persists. This is the sensibility Dana has carried from her earliest darkroom work through to her paintings and mixed media pieces — a photographer's instinct for what light reveals when you trust it completely. In this altered landscape, she offers not just a scene, but a meditation on resilience, impermanence, and the wild beauty of things that refuse to disappear.
